RESUMEN

The international public health emergency related to COVID‐19 caused by the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus has altered several production and registration criteria for sanitary products, including alcohol‐based hand sanitizers. In this work, we investigate the concentration of alcohol in sanitizers presented in gel form applying the principal component regression method on measurements using Infrared and Raman spectroscopic methods. The chemometric calibration is performed using isopropanol or ethanol as active agents, and the method is used to characterize several commercial samples. Furthermore, the results of the prediction of alcohol concentration, obtained by applying the principal component regression and partial least squares methods, in the spectroscopic techniques, were compared with each other and with the results provided by nuclear magnetic resonance. Our results show that spectroscopic techniques coupled with principal component regression are fast, low‐cost, and safe tools for the determination of alcohol concentration, regardless the gelling agent used. RESUMEN

The coronavirus pandemic has accelerated the digital transformation of society, and in particular of university teaching. Professors who were reluctant or unwilling to take advantage of what digital technologies offered suddenly were forced to teach with technologies. In this paper, we describe teaching during the two main phases during the pandemic at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M): the first phase during the complete lockdown and the second where students were allowed on campus with limitations. We also explain how the investment done during these two phases influences teaching in the future and how digital cloud-based technologies promote active learning at the university. © 2021 IEEE.

RESUMEN

The infection by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes the disease called COVID-19, mainly causes alterations in the respiratory system. In severely ill patients, the disease often evolves into an acute respiratory distress syndrome that can predispose patients to a state of hypercoagulability, with thrombosis at both venous and arterial levels. This predisposition presents a multifactorial physiopathology, related to hypoxia as well as to the severe inflammatory process linked to this pathology, including the additional thrombotic factors present in many of the patients. In view of the need to optimise the management of hypercoagulability, the working groups of the Scientific Societies of Anaesthesiology-Resuscitation and Pain Therapy (SEDAR) and of Intensive, Critical Care Medicine and Coronary Units (SEMICYUC) have developed a consensus to establish guidelines for actions to be taken against alterations in haemostasis observed in severely ill patients with COVID-19. These recommendations include prophylaxis of venous thromboembolic disease in these patients, and in the peripartum, management of patients on long-term antiplatelet or anticoagulant treatment, bleeding complications in the course of the disease, and the interpretation of general alterations in haemostasis.
